Scientist – Formulation and Process Development for Advanced Therapeutics

Are you a bioprocess engineer or formulation scientist passionate about shaping the future of advanced therapeutics? Do you have hands-on experience in developing processes or formulations for new modalities? We are looking for a motivated Scientist to support the development of innovative formulations and delivery platforms for cutting-edge modalities, including viral vectors for vaccines and gene therapies.

Join our dynamic team and help drive scientific innovation that can transform patient care globally!

ViSync® aims to develop innovative solutions to address the unmet technical needs of pharmaceutical companies in new modalities, including the cell and gene therapy sector. The joint venture between Hovione and iBET will leverage Hovione’s extensive expertise in pharmaceutical development, particle engineering and industrialization, with iBET’s cutting-edge research in biotechnological sciences. The new company is an agile organisation, with experts in the team working closely with experts across Hovione and iBET, as well as with international collaborators and partners, to develop and harness emerging platforms in new modalities.

The role is placed at ViSync’s new site in Oeiras, Portugal, where you will work in an international environment at the fore-front of New Modalities.

What you will do

As a bioprocess engineer or formulation scientist, you will collaborate closely with scientists, project leaders, and technical specialists to support the advancement of our platforms and projects, whether internal, collaborative, or customer-driven. You will contribute to the design and execution of laboratory experiments focused on developing and optimizing formulation and analytical approaches for advanced drug delivery systems, including viral and non-viral vectors used in vaccines and gene therapies.

Your role will involve: Designing and conducting experiments for formulation development and particle engineering; Supporting the development of scalable and efficient delivery systems; Analyzing and interpreting experimental data to inform project direction; Contributing to characterization and stability studies; Preparing reports and presenting findings to internal teams and external partners.

You will be part of a cross-disciplinary, international team working with innovative technologies to help shape the future of advanced therapeutics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research & Development
    • Contribute to the design, development, and optimization of formulations and delivery systems for advanced therapeutics, including viral and non-viral vectors.
    • Execute experimental plans for stability studies and product characterization, and analyze data to support formulation development.
  • Innovation & Expertise
    • Apply scientific knowledge to improve formulation strategies and support the development of scalable drug delivery solutions.
    • Stay current with emerging technologies and contribute ideas to enhance R&D workflows.
  • Project Support
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely and high-quality execution of research activities.
    • Support project planning by providing technical input and identifying potential risks or challenges.
  • Documentation & Communication
    • Document experimental procedures, results, and conclusions in lab notebooks and technical reports.
    • Present findings to internal teams and external collaborators, and contribute to discussions on project direction.
  • Compliance & Quality
    • Ensure all lab work complies with GLP, HSE, and regulatory standards.
    • Assist in audit preparation and quality assurance activities.
  • Funding & Collaboration
    • Support the preparation of technical content for grant applications and collaborative research proposals.
    • Demonstrate flexibility to support multiple projects and adapt to shifting priorities in a dynamic lab environment.

Education / Qualification

Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Technology, Biotechnology, Biological Engineering, Biology, or a related field. A PhD is a strong advantage but not required.

Experience

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in Research & Development, ideally within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, CRO/CDMO industry, or academia. Experience in formulation development, bioprocessing, or drug delivery systems is highly desirable. Familiarity with working in cross-functional teams and contributing to project execution is a plus.

Technical Competencies

  • Solid understanding of gene therapy technologies, particularly in viral vector formulation, production, and characterization. Experience with advanced drug delivery systems for ATMPs is a strong plus.
  • Experience in formulation development (liquid and/or dry) or analytical testing is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in fast-paced or start-up environments, showing adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a results-driven mindset.
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills, with the ability to draw conclusions from complex datasets.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with data analysis tools (e.g., Power BI, GraphPad Prism). Experience with statistical analysis or machine learning is a plus.
  • Knowledge of GLP, regulatory compliance, and industry standards for advanced therapeutics.
  • Excellent communication skills, including fluency in English and the ability to present scientific findings clearly to diverse audiences.
